Giving back has always been important to me, but I did not fully realize its impact until I became actively involved in volunteer work at the local career center. What started as an effort to help others turned into a transformative experience that unexpectedly shaped my perspective. During times of uncertainty, volunteering became more than just a way to give. It became a source of stability, purpose, and connection. Through this journey, I learned three key lessons that reinforced the power of service and its profound effect on individuals and communities.

1. Being involved in our community is always important, but it matters even more during challenging times.

When the world feels uncertain or overwhelming, it is easy to withdraw and focus inward. However, engaging with my community during difficult moments provided a sense of grounding. Whether it was offering a kind word, a new perspective, or simply showing up, I saw firsthand how small actions can create a ripple effect. Even when I could not change the more significant circumstances, being present and contributing made a tangible difference in the lives of others and in my outlook on what is and what is to come.

2. It helped me focus my energy on something I could control.

Life presents many things and situations beyond our control, and it is easy to feel powerless in the face of uncertainty or adversity. Volunteering gave me an outlet to channel my energy into something positive. Instead of dwelling on problems I could not solve, I focused on what I could do to make a difference. Helping one person at a time, offering support, or sharing my skills gave me a renewed sense of purpose. And, honestly, some days, it also gave me an excellent reason to get out of bed in the morning! This shift in focus was empowering. It reminded me that even in the most difficult times, there is always something we can do to make a meaningful impact.

3. I gained more than I gave.

The most unexpected lesson I learned was that giving back often gives us more than we expect. Seeing someone have an “aha” moment, feel valued, or simply know that someone cares was more rewarding than I imagined. The gratitude, connection, and shared humanity from volunteering were invaluable. While I may have wanted to help others, I walked away with greater fulfillment, perspective, and purpose.
