The SIGNAL Prompt Formula
A strong prompt works like a useful work brief. It tells the AI enough about the situation, the intended result, and the boundaries of the task to produce something you can evaluate and refine.
Situation
Give the essential background, source material, or circumstances the AI needs to understand.
Intended Outcome
State what success looks like and what you want the AI to accomplish.
Guidance
Provide the audience, perspective, priorities, examples, or criteria that should guide the response.
Needed Output
Specify the format, structure, length, level of detail, or organization you need.
Accuracy & Boundaries
Identify what must be verified, what should not be assumed, and any privacy, policy, or use limitations.
Language & Tone
Describe the voice, reading level, style, or communication approach that fits the situation.
Practice 1: Diagnose a Weak Prompt
Starting prompt
Which answer best describes the problem with this prompt?
A stronger version
Practice 2: Choose the More Useful Prompt
Prompt A
Give me ideas to make this process better.
Prompt B
Review the workflow below and identify five opportunities to reduce unnecessary steps, improve handoffs, or save time. For each recommendation, describe the issue, the proposed change, and the likely benefit. Prioritize practical changes that can be tested within the current team. Do not recommend removing required review, approval, privacy, or compliance steps.
Practice 3: Add the Guardrail
What is the best next step before entering the notes into an AI tool?
Follow your organization's technology, privacy, security, and data handling requirements.
Do not put confidential, personal, proprietary, regulated, or otherwise restricted information into an AI tool unless its use is authorized for that data.
AI can support work, but important conclusions and decisions still require appropriate human judgment and verification.
Build a Prompt for Real Work
Choose a starting point or build from scratch. The lab will assemble your responses into a reusable prompt and show which SIGNAL elements you have included.
Summarize
Turn notes, documents, or information into a focused summary for a defined audience.
Draft
Create a first draft of a message, document, agenda, or other workplace communication.
Analyze
Look for themes, patterns, tradeoffs, gaps, risks, or options in information you provide.
Brainstorm
Generate practical options or ideas while staying within defined priorities and constraints.

Review Before You Use the Output
A well structured prompt improves direction. It does not guarantee a correct response. Use this quick review before relying on AI generated work.
Check important facts, calculations, names, dates, citations, and claims against reliable sources.
Look for missing context, exceptions, stakeholders, risks, or requirements that materially affect the result.
Confirm that the content fits your organization's policies, privacy requirements, security expectations, and intended use.
Make sure the response actually supports the work rather than merely sounding polished.
Watch for unsupported assumptions, oversimplification, or language that could distort how people or situations are represented.
Apply appropriate judgment before sending, publishing, deciding, or acting on the output.
Better prompts come from clearer thinking.
You have practiced giving AI better direction, adding useful boundaries, and reviewing output before use. The goal is not to write the longest prompt. It is to give the AI the information that matters for the work.

AI tools, organizational policies, laws, capabilities, and risks vary and change over time. Follow your organization’s current requirements and consult an appropriately qualified resource when needed.
Do not enter confidential, proprietary, personal, regulated, client, patient, employee, research, or other sensitive information into an AI system unless your organization has explicitly approved that tool, account, data, and use. AI outputs may be inaccurate, incomplete, biased, fabricated, outdated, or unsuitable for the intended purpose. Verify important information using reliable, current sources. Human review, judgment, and accountability remain essential.
